About Erin McDonald
Some designers find their way into the industry.
Erin McDonald was born into it, instinctively.
Long before event design became a branded discipline, Erin understood how space could make people feel. In the early 1990s, while balancing life as a professional dancer, he began freelancing with some of Chicago’s most respected event production houses. Even then, he possessed a rare ability: the discipline of performance paired with the emotional intelligence of a florist.
He was never simply decorating rooms.
He was shaping atmosphere.
Over three decades, Erin has created refined, architectural, and deeply human environments for clients ranging from countless couples celebrating their marriage to U.S. Presidents, international dignitaries, and celebrities. As a former Vice President at HMR Designs in Chicago, Erin branched out on his own to found Erin McDonald Co. in 2010, bringing a philosophy rooted in simplicity: keep it simple, and the design will speak volumes.
This unique foundation shaped an approach that rarely repeats the same design twice, instead crafting bespoke experiences that reflect each client’s vision. In 2019, Erin opened a Rochester, New York office in his hometown, expanding capabilities while maintaining the boutique, personal approach that defines the firm.

Our Team Approach
Erin McDonald Co. operates with a unique philosophy of building local teams in each market we serve. Rather than traveling with the same crew everywhere, we cultivate relationships with talented professionals in Chicago, Rochester, Vermont, Naples, and beyond. This approach ensures that every event benefits from local expertise, vendor relationships, and market knowledge.
Our network spans the Midwest and East Coast, with trusted teams who understand both our design standards and the nuances of their local markets. From the Finger Lakes region to Chicago’s most prestigious venues, we work with professionals who share our commitment to excellence and attention to detail.

Community Impact & Values
Erin has a long-term commitment to meaningful causes including the Ronald McDonald House, Camp Out for Kids, and cancer research.
Our work supports causes close to our hearts, and we believe that clients particularly value working with vendors who demonstrate clear community involvement and social responsibility. Every event we design carries the potential to make a difference beyond the celebration itself.
Erin’s Story
Over the past few years, my journey has been shaped by both challenge and resilience. Like many, the pandemic impacted me deeply, both personally and financially, but I found my footing again and began rebuilding with renewed focus and purpose. Just as things were coming back into alignment, I was faced with an unexpected diagnosis: throat cancer.
In 2023, I underwent 40 rounds of radiation and seven weeks of chemotherapy. During that time, I continued doing what I love: creating and supporting weddings across Rochester, Vermont, and Chicago. It wasn’t easy, but I was never alone. My team showed up in extraordinary ways, and my clients met me with patience, grace, and understanding that I will never forget.
Those experiences changed me. They deepened my appreciation for connection, for celebration, and for the privilege of being part of such meaningful moments in people’s lives.
As of September 2026, I am proud to be three years cancer-free. Today, I move forward with even greater intention – grounded in gratitude, strengthened by what I’ve overcome, and more committed than ever to the work I love.

Great design can amplify important missions and create lasting impact.

Our Philosophy
Known for clean lines, disciplined palettes, and dramatic spatial impact, Erin’s work is less about ornament and more about intention. Low, tailored tabletops give way to statement ceilings. Understated floral compositions are paired with bold structural moments. Nothing is excessive. Everything has purpose.
We believe in the power of color theory, the importance of sustainable practices, and the magic that happens when design serves the deeper purpose of human connection. Our sustainable approach includes eliminating floral foam and sourcing from local farms during season, reducing environmental impact while supporting local communities.
Every design tells a story. Every color choice has meaning. Every detail serves the larger vision of creating moments that matter. This is what we bring to your celebration.
We are not for everyone. We are for those who value refinement, clarity, and collaboration.

Let’s Create Something Beautiful.
Whether you’re planning an intimate gathering or a grand celebration, we’d love to learn about your vision. From our offices in Rochester and Chicago, we serve clients throughout the Midwest and East Coast, always with the same commitment to creating environments that speak volumes.
